After we left Putian,
we came to the famous county
of Huian.
Here there is an impressive
old town,
which is known for its coastal scenery,
historical relics
and time-honored folk customs.
These are the charms of Huian.
Learn Chinese the fun way and enjoy
a happy journey across China!
Hello, I'm Merry Han Jia.
Hi, I'm Happy Yuanyuan.
The old town we mentioned
just now is right here.
It is the ancient town of Chongwu.
What characteristics does this
ancient town have?
How special is it?
Well, let's watch as we
walk along.
Yeah, let's go.
Chongwu was built over 600
years ago.
It is a well-preserved ancient
coastal town built with stone.
This ancient town
was built completely with
granite stone blocks.
Outside the town there are
many islands and reefs.
Due to its complex topography,
it has been a town of strategic importance,
easy to hold but hard to attack.
The town has four city gates,
each reinforced with a high wall.
The east, west and north gates each
have a beacon tower on top.
The city wall is surrounded
by a moat.
On top of the city wall, there are
over 1300 bowmen crenels.
Oh, with this kind of layout,
could the city wall resist
enemy attack?
"Dikang" means to resist,
or stand up to.
So "dikang" means to resist,
or stand up to.
Zhe zuo chengqiáng kěyǐ dǐkang diren de jingōng
This city wall can resist enemy attack.
The solid stone city wall and
antique structures
bear witness to Chongwu's
600-year history.
I like the time-honored city wall
and winding alleys here.
But Chongwu is most appealing
for its Huian women living here.
They should be Huian women.
Let me say hello to them.
Hello! Are you ladies of Huian?
Yes.
Hey, Han Jia, how come you've
turned into a Huian girl?
In Rome, do as the Romans do.
Look, all of them are my
new friends.
He is my co-host, Yuanyuan.
The ethnic costumes you are
wearing are so beautiful!
Yuanyuan, you're wrong.
All Huian women are genuine
Han people.
So what they are wearing
are not ethnic costumes.
Oh, you're all of the Han ethnicity!
But why do you wear this kind
of clothes as Han people?
This has something to do
with the longtime coast way
of life.
Huian women's daily wear
is closely linked with the oceanic
culture here.
"Xi xi xiang guan"?
The "xi xi" in "xi xi xiang guan"
refers to inhalation and exhalation.
This idiom literally means
as closely linked as inhalation
and exhalation.
It is used as a metaphor for
being closely linked.
So "xi xi xiang guan" means
to be closely linked.
Look, the golden bamboo hat
represents the golden beach.
Exactly. Look, my white scarf
represents the white clouds
in the sky.
And their blue blouses
represent the ocean and the sky.
And my black pants
represent the black reefs.
Oh, there are so many intricacies
in your daily wear!
Apart from these,
the costume and ornaments of Huian
women have other characteristics.
I can tell.
You mean their face-hiding scarf,
their short blouse
and their broad, loose
pants, right?
韓佳:這頭巾夏天可以用來遮陽防曬;
Their scarf can hide their face
from sunshine in summer,
fend off wind and sand
可以用來擋風防沙;
in spring and autumn
and help keep warm
in winter.
The scarf has so many functions!
Right. Look, after we wear
the scarf,
our face becomes oval in shape.
The blouse we wear
can prevent from getting wet
and soiled
when we are at work.
Our broad and loose pants
can dry very quickly
in the sea wind
if they get wet inadvertently
from the seawater.
That's interesting.
All these are visible things.
There is still one thing which
you haven't seen.
Where is it?
It's right here.
There are so many things
under it.
Actually the bamboo hat
functions as Huian women's handbag.
They normally place many
of their belongings
under their bamboo hat.
Today fishing remains
one of the main sources of
income in Huian.
When the men are fishing out
on the sea,
the hardworking Huian women
would mend their fishing nets
or sort out the fish at
the seaside.
Han Jia, I'm back.
Are you back from a fishing trip?
Originally I did want to go.
But I didn't dare to
get aboard.
So I had to try to catch fish by
hand in the nearby sea area.
Did you catch any fish?
No. That's why I came here
to see if I can be of any
help for you.
Look, we're all mending
fishing nets.
Can you help out?
"Da ba shou"?
"Da ba shou" means to help out,
or assist.
So "da ba shou" means to help out,
or assist.
Wǒmen xūyao bāngzhu nǐ neng dā bǎ shǒu ma
We need some assistance.
Could you help out?
No problem. Let me give
you a hand.
But you have to teach
me how to do it.
No problem.
Huian is known for its long history
and many scenic spots and places of
historical interest.
Chongwu is a well-preserved coastal
ancient stone town.
The solid stone city walls
and many time-honored ancient structures
bear witness to the historical changes
of this stone town.
The natural beauty and historical sites here
are a significant feature of the town,
attracting visitors from all walks of life.
Then let's have a check
on what they have learned.
Okay. Here's today's award-
winning question.
At the end of the program, we'd
still want to remind you
not to forget to continue
to watch our program tomorrow
at the same time.
And join us for the Happy Journey
across China.
And don't forget our slogan.

  1. Walled City of Chongwu

Adapted from Magic Fujian© 2007 by Dr. Bill Brown

In ancient times, cities around the world were walled, and only a century ago China had hundreds of walled cities scattered around the country. Even Xiamen was walled until the 20s and 30s, when the walls were destroyed to allow the downtown area to expand more easily.

Today, Chongwu is one of the few remaining walled cities in China. The walls were built in 1384, and are 2.5 kilometres long and 7 meters high. Over 1600 battlements allowed locals' to safely fend off Japanese pirates, Chinese pirates, and foreign barbarians like myself!

I usually enter the gate by Xin Hua Nan Street. It is such a maze inside that I've considered tying a piece of string to the gate and my belt so I can find my way back out again! But the walled city is small, so if you go in one direction long enough you're bound to come out upon the wall, a gate, and freedom.

I enjoy the Chen family's beautiful old home with its carved stone, wooden paneling, and courtyard. The last time I visited, their son was making a batch of Chongwu's famous fish balls. I took a batch home and fried them up. Heavenly!

At the "T" intersection we go right until we reach the wall, and then walk along it to the lighthouse. This offers the best view in town of the walled city, and of the curved beach. Hui'an is famous for its dozens of miles of fine beaches.

I love the exotic walled city of Chongwu—it's narrow streets, and ancient homes. But people also come from all over China to see the exotic Hui'an maidens!
